The Inception of a Vision
Our journey began with a passion for creating spaces that balance functionality with aesthetic appeal. Our first project—a modern bachelor pad in downtown Calgary—set the tone for our design ethos: clean lines, neutral palettes, and intentional decor choices that enhance everyday living. This project cemented our reputation for seamlessly blending contemporary sophistication with livability.
Establishing Our Expertise in Urban Living
In 2018, we took on projects that challenged conventional urban design. Our work on a high-rise condo renovation in Calgary introduced us to the complexities of designing for compact, high-density living. We developed expertise in maximizing space, integrating multipurpose furniture, and using natural light to create a sense of openness—principles that continue to shape our approach to urban residential projects.
Breaking Into Commercial Interiors
By 2019, our reputation for innovative residential design caught the attention of business owners. We expanded into the commercial sector, designing interiors for boutique shops, private offices, and hospitality spaces. A standout project that year was a concept-driven café in Calgary, blending Scandinavian minimalism with warm, inviting textures. This project marked our entry into commercial design, proving our ability to translate brand identities into physical spaces.
Adapting to a New Normal
The onset of 2020 reshaped how we think about interior spaces. As remote work became the norm, we saw a growing demand for home offices and multifunctional living areas. Our focus shifted toward creating adaptable, ergonomic home environments that supported productivity and well-being. This led us to collaborate with Canadian furniture designers to develop customized solutions tailored to modern work-from-home needs.
Expanding into Multi-Unit and Renovation Projects
In 2021, we broadened our expertise to multi-unit residential developments and renovation projects. We worked with real estate professionals and homeowners looking to modernize older properties while maintaining their original character. A key project involved redesigning the interiors of a mid-century home in Calgary, carefully balancing historic charm with modern updates. This shift allowed us to refine our ability to work with existing structures, heritage elements, and unique spatial challenges.
Broadening Design Applications & Exploring New Materials
In 2023, we focused on diversifying the types of spaces we worked with, including hospitality, wellness, and hybrid workspaces. We explored new materials and sustainable design elements that could be incorporated into both residential and commercial projects. A particular focus was on multi-use spaces, helping clients rethink how their interiors could adapt to changing needs—whether for work, relaxation, or social gatherings.
A New Chapter – Rebranding & Expansion into Vancouver
This year marks an exciting transition as SW Design undergoes a full rebrand, reflecting our evolution as a firm and our commitment to a more expansive vision for interior design. With this change, we have also relocated our headquarters to Vancouver to tap into a larger, more dynamic market with increasing demand for high-quality, design-forward interiors.
Vancouver’s diverse architectural landscape and strong real estate market offer new opportunities to work on larger residential developments, hospitality spaces, and luxury home projects. The move also allows us to be closer to key industry partners, suppliers, and a growing network of design professionals. As we settle into this new phase, our goal remains the same: to create interiors that balance function, beauty, and the way people truly live.
